Colorado Ranks in Top 10 States for Divorce

In a recent article published by Westword, the top 10 states leading the way in divorce were ranked. Colorado made it on this list. Surprised? While the divorce rate in Colorado has slightly decreased over the years, it is still one of the leading states for marital dissolution.

Here is how the top 10 broke down:

  1. Nevada
  2. Arkansas
  3. Oklahoma
  4. West Virginia
  5. Idaho
  6. Alaska
  7. Wyoming
  8. Florida
  9. Colorado
  10. Kentucky

Taking a Closer Look at the Statistics

As of 2011, there were approximately 4.4 divorces occurring per 1,000 residents in Colorado. In comparison, the divorce rate used to be ate 5.5 in 1990. This improvement shouldn't be purely taken as a sign of marital steadiness though. Many believe that the divorce rates have dropped, and will continue to drop, as people opt for less traditional forms of family. Many individuals remain together without ever getting married, splitting up whenever they see fit-without an official legal divorce, there is not statistic to assess.

Another easy misconception that should be dispelled is that a high divorce rate indicates unhappiness. Just because Colorado is one of the leading states for divorce, does not mean that residents are suffering more than neighboring states. On the contrary, this healthy divorce rate could indicate that residents are willing to accept the end of a marriage when it comes, rather than "stick it out" like so many couples try to do, only increasing their unhappiness in the end.
